We ran into Joris in Hayes Valley. He was in a trio which included two other handsomely dressed gentlemen (which will be featured next). Joris is Dutch who came to San Francisco by way of Australia. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to tell us label names but that’s okay because the pictures are enough of a visual to demonstrate what a good looking outfit looks like. The outfit uses basics, but each piece has unique details that we can appreciate. The mixing of fabrics on key items such as the trench with leather strap detail on the collar and the dual tone of the fabric and leather shoes add interest to the look. Joris is a great example of how to coordinate an outfit that is perfect for the two-faced temperature (looks warm and sunny yet feels crisp and cool) of the bay area.

What got him noticed? That gorgeous hat. We love men in hats. It’s something that I’ve noticed since the 5th grade. Hats flatter men. Sure, there are rare exceptions but most men benefit from wearing hats. I’m talking nice hats, here. Think of Dick Tracey. Think of him without a hat. Are you picking up what I’m putting down? The hat adds something. Ups his handsomeness factor. Creates some mystery. In fact I don’t recall any man who doesn’t look better in a hat. To reassure myself of this, I just did a google image search for “men in hats”. My screen was filled with trig and polished men. Johnny Depp, Cary Grant, Ewan McGregor and some non-celebrities. All great looking men . . . all looking even greater looking thanks to those hats. Not to say that Andrew here needs any improvement in the looks category but isn’t that hat just the icing on the cake? The flattering frames of his sunglasses are the cherry on top. It’s such a great look. You men can benefit from the style factor of a hat. Take it from this lady . . . instant style fix for when you’re having a bad hair day, feeling kind of “blah” but don’t want to look “blah”, or you need an additional layer to keep yourself warm. Or some of you men might be concerned with hair loss. Who will be able to tell if you’ve got a hat on? Can you tell I’m on a mission here. I want to see more men wearing hats. . . and I know I’m not the only woman that feels this way. There you have it. Get a really nice looking hat, some cool shades, a nice wool coat, some jeans and dark shoes and you’ve got yourself a really great weekend look.

We ran into Sam in Hayes Valley. He was visiting our lovely city from Portland and the T&P team liked his city trekking outfit. You put a puff vest, a long-sleeve shirt, pants and sneakers on a man without any style and you’d get a very different outfit. Sam creates a look with those basic items. He looks clean, comfy, coordinated and we definitely like it. So here’s some inspiration for those athletic or outdoorsy types where comfort and ease of motion are priority. Just because you like to wear shoes that you can shoot some hoops in doesn’t mean you have to settle for boring basics. Some grooming (a visit to the barber shop once in awhile) and a little thought into your outfit makes all the difference!

We discovered this “Hot Dad” walking with a “Hot Mom” and their little baby on the way to get coffee. When I saw the outfit that this new dad put together I had to photograph him for T&P. You know, to give other new dads hope at remaining in tip-top shape despite the lack of sleep and the new responsibility of rearing a little one. Ben here is proof that you can fulfill your fatherly responsibilities and look great while doing it. Case in point . . . you see that handsome bag he’s wearing crossbody? Leather strap, blue waxed canvas. That’s his diaper bag. Hint for all those moms out there. . . maybe put a nice unisex bag on the baby registry so that Dad will proudly hold that bag. Not that a responsible dad would refuse to hold a pink puffy bag with flowers and elephants all over it, but honestly. . . why not chose a handsome unisex bag instead? Ben’s style can be described as utilitarian yet handsome. Everything he’s wearing looks well-made and fits him perfectly for a slim silhouette. Pants and shirt are from Rogue Territory which fit quite nicely with his utilitarian/made to last style. Looking at the details (stitching, finishing, etc.) of their clothing, it’s evident that quality is top priority. His shoes are Alden and even though Alden is a famous brand (Charles Alden founded the company in 1884 and according to this, Alden is one of the last remaining shoe companies to still handcraft their shoes in the United States.), I still had a semi-hard time finding the style that Ben is seen wearing here. Edit: The ones that Ben is wearing were purchased at Leather Soul. While looking for his shoes, I saw the blog post about the line for Unionmade and there ( I thought) they were. I gotta tell you, I looked all over the net for Alden shoe styles and I have to say the line they did for Unionmade is their best looking of the bunch. These are the ones that I originally thought Ben was wearing, but those are not boots. These are also really beautiful too. So there you have it, if you prefer boots, check out the ones at Leather Soul. These are great too at Leather Soul. For a similar low-cut style, check out UnionMade’s Alden line. Personally I prefer boots but that’s just my humble opinion.

Rounding out the outfit, let’s get back to that bag. It’s from Peg + Awl. Reading the description, I’ve fallen in love with the bag. In their own words . . . “The Waxed Canvas Tote from Peg and Awl boasts the permanence of this wonder-material while also incorporating vintage fabric lined-pockets, reclaimed leather straps and closures (from antique gun holsters and saddles,) brass rivets and Sam Browne buttons”. That pretty much describes the artifacts that would be carried by my dream men that I see in those daguerreotypes . . . which reminds me of this great tumblr. Check it out for some of the original men who defined “Trig and Polished”. But I digress . . . Ben thanks for posing for T&P and congrats on the little one!

The first thing that caught our attention about Omid were those gorgeous shoes. Turns out those shoes used to belong to his father who bought them on a trip to India in the 80′s. Looking at them says a lot about how Omid and his father take care of their shoes. That and the fact that those shoes have held up for all these years. Unfortunately Omid couldn’t find a brand name so it’s going to be impossible to score yourselves a pair.

Omid has quite a few stamps in his passport as he is an Iranian born in Germany, he studied in Argentina, lived in Dublin, Ireland, had a brief stint in NYC and finally landed in San Francisco where we found him. Top that off with speaking 5 languages and a job with Google as a Partnership Development Manager for the Latin American Market, it makes sense that Omid’s wardrobe is of the international variety. As if Omid is not busy enough traveling the world, he also runs his own lifestyle curation project, MOSAIC. While he enjoys stocking his wardrobe with goods from his travels, here in San Francisco, he mentioned Maas & Stacks and Welcome Stranger as a couple of his favorite local stores.

Glasses: Warby Parker – Griffen Revolver Black
Jacket: Zara, purchased in Ireland
Jeans: Levi’s
Shirt: United Colors of Benetton, while in Santiago, Chile
Shoes: Vintage, Omid’s father purchased in India, during the 80′s

Hello!

I wanted to invite you to my Art Show at the Piedmont Ave Artwalk. Yes, the subject matter is a bit different from what I concentrate on here at Trig & Polished, but I hope you find that it catches your fancy. My photographs will be showing at the art space in Montano Velo, the cool bike shop on the northern end of Piedmont Avenue.

I would love to see you at the opening on November 15th. Details are provided in the image above. And yes, I will be updating the site with more posts of those snazzy gentlemen that I have spotted in the streets but until then plan on coming to the Artwalk. It’s a fun evening of art, cool shops, free wine, and smiles all around!

Love,

Earlier this month, T&P attended the opening party for the Convert Shoe Store on Fourth Street in Berkeley. It was there where we met the owner, Randy Brewer. Decked out in American made apparel, it is clear that he puts more effort into his fashion choices than simply just what looks good. The shirt and tie are from Gitman, and the pants are AG. Both companies proudly proclaim “Made in the USA” labels.

I zeroed in on that gorgeous wooden watch and Randy told me that it is from WeWood, an Italian company committed to conservation. They promise to plant one tree for every watch purchase. Pretty good looking sustainability! They make some gorgeous watches, I already have my favorite one picked out!
The handsome young host of the party was none other than Randy’s son, Ford. In that suit and impromptu pocket square (I hear a friend made it for him out of a paper napkin), I couldn’t resist taking a picture of the Jr. Trig & Polished gentleman. Thanks for keeping us well-nourished with empanadas and advising us to, “Take a napkin, these things are greasy!”. They were tasty and we are glad we took your advice. And it’s like everytime we’d have a craving for another empanada, there you were. You are the host with the most!
Check out the new Convert Shoe Store on Fourth Street for some great shoes for men (and women–but we are talking about menswear here). I personally love the boots, my favorites being the bottom two. So handsome!

Sorting through the stalls at the Fair scored him a neat find, that black leather vintage mail carrier bag that he is converting into an Ipad case. What a great way to revive something considered obsolete and make it fit in the modern world! How cool is it that he is going to be the only person in the streets with that bag? Oh, how I love vintage!

On this day of trig scouting with my T&P team members (shout out to Gillian, Shauntée, and Amy) in tow, it wasn’t easy to miss Owen standing on the curb waiting to cross the street. Part of the reason I love doing menswear street style is because of the challenge. Let’s face it, seeing a man who takes the effort to style himself up a bit, is a rare find. So, the T&P radar went off about 50 yards away from Owen. As we approached him and as I took these photos, we learned that Owen has his own style site called Band of Rakes. Surprise, surprise. This man knows about style. How to spot it and how to do it. Check out how he pulls off wearing a linen blazer with red pants. You need skills to pull that off. Take notes!
